Tunnel #9 Repairs
Location: Placer County, CA
A project for a valued client, scope of work includes contact grouting of 705LF of voids behind an existing concrete tunnel during a scheduled maintenance shut-down. Before grouting can begin, the tunnel will be shut down and drained of water. Once dewatered, multiple crews will work 24/7 to complete the project and get the tunnel back on line by the in-service date.
Project challenges included placing shoring and equipment inside the tunnel and implementing detailed safety planning and training to ensure crew safety. To ensure a safe project, highly-experienced tunnel crews are scheduled to perform the work. With project specs calling for 800 cubic yards of grout to be placed in a strict time frame, contingency plans critical to project success are put in place to account for any equipment or machinery malfunction that could impact operations. With the tunnel draining into an adjacent creek, thorough plans to mitigate any potential environmental hazards are in place.
